Dwurnik

Polish painter and graphic artist, one of the most widely recognised persona of Polish modern art. Sole Polish artist who succeeded internationally even before the political transformation (among others: he participated in “Documenta 7” in Kassel in 1982). Also – the only artist - who irrespectively of the recognition in professional circles – became popular among all layers of art consumers. Within years 1963-70 Dwurnik studied painting, graphic art and sculpture at Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 1965 he began a series of drawings and water-colours independently of his course of studies, and since 1966 he also began a series of oil paintings “Hitchiker’s journeys” – cities seen in a characteristic manner from a bird’s eye view (the series has been continued till now). Since 1970 Dwurnik has created several other series of paintings, among others: “Sportsmen” (1972-1978), “Road to the East” (1989-1991), “Since December to June” (1990-1994), “Azure” (90s), “Portrait” (since 70s), “Workers” (80s), “Long live the war!” (1991-1993), “Blue cities” (since 1993), “Diagonal ones” (since 1993), “Enumeration” (since 1996), or colourful abstract paintings made in action-painting technique – “Twenty fifth”. Apart from painting, Dwurnik does graphic art and drawing (both autonomous series and illustrations) and monumental painting compositions in public space. In 2007 he made drawings and gouaches which accompanied a cartoon by Andrzej Baranski “Greengrocer’s, 360 degrees”. Dwurnik lives and works in Warsaw.
